Back in 2002 when I was a harried relief/supply/substitute English teacher seeking some free-period downtime in the school library, I picked up a copy of North & South magazine, read the ‘Places in the Heart’ section on the back page, thought “I could do that,” and did. The story, about a high-country horse trek I went on when I was 12, was published and has led, amongst other adventures, to my walking the Inca Trail, sleeping in a swag beside a crocodile-infested river in the Australian Outback and finding a mermaid's corpse under New York’s Brooklyn Bridge. Even relief teaching’s not that exciting.
From 2018 till 2022 I was sole contributor to the Sunday Star-Times 'World Famous in NZ' column, as well as supplying longer stories. I have also been published often in the NZ Herald and Herald on Sunday, and my work has appeared in most of New Zealand's other major and provincial newspapers, as well as in a wide range of magazines including North & South, NZ Listener, Next, NZ Life & Leisure, MiNDFOOD, World, Let's Travel, Luxury Travel, Destinations, Simply You Living, AA Directions, Motorhomes, Caravans & Destinations, NZ Woman's Weekly, Woman's Day, Australian Women's Weekly, Top Gear, and the inflight magazines Kia Ora, SilverKris, Sawasdee, and Tiger Tales. I have also contributed to Australian newspapers: the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, The Australian; and the Independent (UK) and several Canadian newspapers; as well as the Yahoo!nz website travel page and the House of Travel and Air France websites. Tourism Australia has used my work in several advertising campaigns and I have written two magazine inserts for Tourism New Zealand.
Before specialising in travel, I had many opinion pieces published in the New Zealand Herald, The Press and The Waikato Times newspapers; reviewed books for The Press and cars for Top Gear; worked as a freelance proof-reader and sub-editor; and wrote occasional features for lifestyle magazines.
As well as writing, I take my own photographs. I travel both independently and in association with regional tourism organisations. I am based in Auckland, New Zealand. I was President of NZ Travel Communicators for two years, retiring in 2012 after six years on the committee.
Here is a recent unsolicited email of appreciation of my work from Jorin Sievers, Studio Manager at the Yahoo!NZ website:
Hi Pam,
You’re an absolute star.
I am truly amazed at how quickly you have turned all this work around for me.
From years working with many writers, I know it takes true talent to produce such consistently high quality work on such short deadlines.
The final story is also great, with Toby’s character really bringing the personality of the tour to life. Well done.
Many thanks again.
